The LA Peppermint Camellia is hardy in zones 7 to 9 and thrives in full to part sun, performing best with morning light and protection from harsh afternoon sun and cold, drying winds. Like all camellias it is acid-loving and demands rich, moist, well-drained soil that never stays waterlogged.
Planting
- Choose a sheltered site with dappled or morning sun and afternoon shade, ideally protected from winter wind.
- Provide acidic, organically rich, well-draining soil; amend heavy or alkaline ground with compost and pine bark or peat to lower pH and improve drainage.
- Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper than the ball itself.
- Set the plant so the root flare sits slightly high, at or just above the surrounding soil line, since camellias resent deep planting; backfill gently and water in thoroughly to settle the soil.
- Spread a 2 to 3 inch layer of mulch to keep roots cool and moist, pulling it back a couple of inches from the trunk so it never touches the stems.
Care & maintenance
- Water. Keep the soil consistently moist during establishment and through dry spells; camellias have shallow roots and dislike both drought and soggy ground.
- Feed. Apply an acid-forming fertilizer (a holly-tone or azalea/camellia formula) in early spring after flowering, and again in early summer if needed; avoid late-season feeding that pushes tender growth.
- Light. Aim for bright shade to morning sun; too much hot direct sun scorches leaves, while deep shade reduces bloom.
- Prune. Prune right after the flowers finish, in spring, to shape the plant and remove dead or crossing wood; this protects the flower buds that form on old wood for the following winter.
- Mulch & winter care. Maintain an even mulch layer year-round and, in the colder end of the range, site the plant where it is sheltered from drying winter winds and morning sun on frosted buds.
- Pests & disease. Watch for tea scale and aphids on the undersides of leaves and for petal blight or root rot in poorly drained soil; good drainage, airflow, and sanitation prevent most problems.
