AboutOrnamental Grasses

The plant that moves. Ornamental grasses do something nothing else in the garden does — they catch the wind. A row of well-placed grasses turns a still landscape into one that's always in motion.

They're also some of the lowest-maintenance plants you can grow: drought-tolerant, deer-resistant, and happy with one cleanup a year. Plus they look incredible in winter when frost outlines every blade.

From compact mounding fescues to towering plumes of miscanthus and pampas, browse the full range — all nursery-grown and landscape-ready.

Frequently asked questions

When should I cut back ornamental grasses?

Late winter to early spring, just before new growth pushes. Cut warm-season grasses to about 4–6 inches above the ground; cool-season types only need a light trim.

Do ornamental grasses need a lot of water?

Once established — usually after the first full season — most are very drought tolerant. They're a smart pick for low-water and xeriscape designs.

Are ornamental grasses deer-resistant?

For the most part, yes. Deer rarely browse ornamental grasses, which makes them one of the most reliable picks for properties with heavy deer pressure.
