While most flowering trees give you a week or two in spring, crape myrtles unfurl crinkled, crepe-paper clusters from early summer straight through fall — up to 100 days of color in watermelon red, lavender, deep purple, coral, and clean white. They're the reason Southern streets and gardens glow all summer, and they earn their place long after the petals drop.

Beautiful in every season. When the flowers finish, the show keeps going: foliage turns brilliant orange, red, and gold in autumn, and once the leaves fall the smooth, mottled bark takes center stage, peeling to reveal cinnamon, tan, and gray underneath. Sizes range from dwarf shrubs barely knee-high to multi-trunked specimen trees over 25 feet, so there's a crape myrtle for a foundation bed, a patio container, or a full-grown focal point.

  • How much sun do crape myrtles need to bloom?

    Full sun is essential — at least 6 hours of direct light a day. The more sun they get, the more flowers you'll see. In too much shade they grow leggy, bloom sparsely, and become prone to powdery mildew.

  • How big do crape myrtles get?

    It depends entirely on the variety. Dwarf types stay 2–5 feet and work as shrubs or container plants, semi-dwarfs reach 6–12 feet, and full tree forms can top 25 feet. Choosing the right size for your spot means far less pruning down the road.

  • Should I prune my crape myrtle hard every year?

    No — the heavy topping often called "crape murder" is unnecessary and ruins the natural shape. A light late-winter trim to remove crossing branches and spent seed heads is plenty. The tree blooms on new growth, so it will flower beautifully without drastic cuts.

  • Are crape myrtles drought tolerant?
