A blueberry bush is the rare edible that's also a beautiful one. Spring brings clouds of dainty white bell-shaped blossoms, summer delivers weeks of plump, sweet-tart berries, and autumn sets the foliage ablaze in fiery red and orange. Add a neat, rounded shape and you have a plant that looks at home in an ornamental border, a foundation planting, or a single container by the back door — all while feeding you for decades.
Productive, long-lived, and easy once they're settled. A healthy blueberry bush can produce for 20 years or more, and the berries you pick warm off the branch are sweeter than anything you'll find in a clamshell. They're naturally low-maintenance: few pests bother them, they don't need much feeding, and their compact size keeps pruning simple.
Choosing the right blueberry
The main thing to match is your climate. Northern highbush types love cold winters and suit the upper half of the country; rabbiteye and southern highbush shrug off heat and humidity for warmer zones. There are early, mid, and late ripeners too — plant a couple of different ones and you can stretch the harvest across much of the summer. While some varieties are self-fertile, nearly all of them set bigger, more abundant crops when planted near a second variety, so two bushes beat one.
Acid-loving and container-friendly. The one rule blueberries insist on is acidic soil (pH around 4.5–5.5). That makes pots a great option — fill them with an acidic, peat- or pine-based mix and you have full control. In the ground, work in plenty of peat or composted pine bark, give them full sun, and keep the roots consistently moist with a good mulch.

Do I need to plant more than one blueberry bush?
You'll get fruit from a single self-fertile variety, but blueberries almost always crop heavier and produce larger berries when two different varieties are planted near each other to cross-pollinate. Two bushes are well worth the space.
