Jelly Bean® Blueberry: Small Shrub, Big Blueberry Flavor

Don't let its compact size fool you—Jelly Bean® Blueberry packs a delicious punch. This prolific producer delivers medium-sized, sweet blueberries in mid-summer with a flavor reminiscent of homemade blueberry jelly. Its naturally tidy habit makes it an excellent choice for small gardens, edible landscapes, and patio containers.

Unlike traditional blueberry bushes, Jelly Bean® features distinctive elongated green leaves that develop attractive red highlights in cooler weather. As the seasons change, the foliage deepens to rich green with beautiful red hues, adding ornamental appeal long after the harvest is over.

Pollination

Self-pollinating — one plant is all you need

Jelly Bean® Blueberry sets fruit with its own pollen, so a single plant will produce a full crop on its own. You don’t need a second variety to get fruit.

Planting another compatible variety nearby can still nudge yields a little higher, and pollinators like bees always help — but it’s a bonus, not a requirement.

Planting & care

Jelly Bean® Blueberry

Jelly Bean® is a compact blueberry that grows about 2–3 feet tall, making it ideal for small gardens and containers. It produces sweet berries in summer and has attractive red fall foliage.

  • Sun: Plant in full sun (6–8+ hours daily).
  • Soil: Use well-drained, acidic soil with a pH of 4.5–5.5. Mix in peat moss or pine bark if needed.
  • Planting: Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and the same depth. Set the plant so the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil. Backfill, firm gently, and apply 2–3 inches of pine bark or pine needle mulch, keeping it away from the stem.
  • Watering: Water deeply immediately after planting. For the first month, keep the soil consistently moist by watering 2–3 times per week if it doesn't rain. After establishment, provide about 1–2 inches of water per week. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely.
  • Fertilizer: Wait until new growth begins, then feed with a fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants according to the label. Fertilize again in late spring if needed. Avoid overfertilizing.
  • Pollination: Jelly Bean® is self-fertile, but planting another blueberry variety nearby will usually increase berry size and yield.
  • Harvest: Pick berries when they are fully blue and come off easily with a gentle touch. They will continue ripening over several weeks.
  • Container Growing: Use a pot at least 18–24 inches wide with drainage holes. Fill with an acidic potting mix, water more frequently than in-ground plants, and refresh mulch annually.

FAQ

Common questions

Jelly Bean® Blueberry FAQs

1. Does Jelly Bean® Blueberry need another blueberry plant to produce fruit?

Jelly Bean® Blueberry is self-pollinating, so it can produce fruit on its own. However, planting another blueberry variety nearby that blooms at a similar time can increase pollination and often results in a larger harvest with bigger berries.

2. Can I grow Jelly Bean® Blueberry in a container?

Yes. Its naturally compact size makes it an excellent choice for containers, raised beds, and other small growing spaces. Plant it in acidic, well-draining soil, keep the soil consistently moist, and place the container in full sun for the best berry production. Growing it in a container also makes it easy to add fresh fruit to patios, balconies, and small outdoor spaces.

3. When are the blueberries ready to harvest?

Jelly Bean® Blueberry produces its sweet, medium-sized berries in mid-summer. Harvest the fruit once the berries are fully blue and come off the stem easily with a gentle pull. Ripe berries can be enjoyed fresh, baked into desserts, or made into jams and preserves.

4. What makes Jelly Bean® Blueberry different from other blueberry bushes?

Jelly Bean® stands out for its compact growth, making it ideal for smaller gardens where traditional blueberry bushes may be too large. It also features distinctive elongated leaves that develop attractive red highlights in cooler weather, providing ornamental interest from spring through fall in addition to a flavorful berry harvest.

5. How much sunlight does Jelly Bean® Blueberry need?

For the healthiest plants and the best fruit production, grow Jelly Bean® Blueberry in full sun, with at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight each day. While it can tolerate a little light shade, more sunlight encourages heavier harvests and helps the foliage develop its best seasonal color.
