Mini Blues Blueberry Planting & Care
Mini Blues is a compact blueberry that produces small, sweet berries and grows well in the ground or in containers.
- Sun: Plant in full sun (6–8+ hours daily).
- Soil: Use acidic, well-drained soil with a pH of 4.5–5.5. Mix in peat moss or soil formulated for acid-loving plants if needed.
- Planting: Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and the same depth. Set the plant so the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil. Backfill gently and apply 2–3 inches of pine bark or pine needle mulch, keeping it a few inches away from the stem.
- Watering: Water deeply immediately after planting. For the first 6–8 weeks, keep the soil consistently moist by watering deeply 2–3 times per week, adjusting for rainfall. After establishment, provide about 1–2 inches of water per week. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely or remain soggy.
- Fertilizer: Wait until new growth begins, then apply a fertilizer made for blueberries or other acid-loving plants according to the label. Feed again in late spring if recommended.
- Pollination: Mini Blues is self-fertile, but planting another blueberry variety nearby that blooms at the same time will usually increase fruit production and berry size.
- Harvest: Pick berries when they are fully blue and detach easily. Allow them to remain on the bush for a few days after turning blue for the best flavor.
- Container Growing: Use a pot at least 16–20 inches wide with drainage holes. Fill with an acidic potting mix, water whenever the top inch of soil begins to dry, and refresh the potting mix every few years.
