Lo-Hugger™ Cranberry: Big Color, Low Profile

Bring year-round interest to your landscape with Lo-Hugger™ Cranberry, a low-growing native shrub that works hard in the garden without demanding much space. This winter-hardy, spreading groundcover forms a dense carpet of deep green foliage through the growing season before turning a rich mahogany-red in fall and winter. Bright red edible berries linger well into the colder months, adding seasonal color and providing fruit for fresh eating or homemade jams and jellies.

Perfect for borders, slopes, naturalized areas, and mass plantings, Lo-Hugger™ Cranberry helps fill bare spaces with attractive evergreen-like foliage and long-lasting seasonal appeal. Its compact habit also makes it a great choice for large containers, where its colorful foliage and persistent berries can be enjoyed up close.

Pollination

Self-pollinating — one plant is all you need

Lo-Hugger™ Cranberry sets fruit with its own pollen, so a single plant will produce a full crop on its own. You don’t need a second variety to get fruit.

Planting another compatible variety nearby can still nudge yields a little higher, and pollinators like bees always help — but it’s a bonus, not a requirement.

Plant guide

Planting & care

Lo-Hugger™ Cranberry Planting & Care

Light: Plant in full sun (6–8+ hours daily) for the best flowering, fall color, and berries. Tolerates light shade but will produce fewer berries.

  • Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained soil. Adaptable to most garden soils but avoid constantly soggy locations.
  • Planting: Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and the same depth. Place the plant so the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil. Backfill with native soil, firm gently, and water thoroughly to remove air pockets.
  • Watering: Water deeply immediately after planting. For the first 2 weeks, water every 2–3 days if there is no rain. For the next 2–3 months, water deeply once or twice a week. After establishment (about one growing season), water during extended dry periods.
  • Mulch: Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the plant, keeping it a few inches away from the stems to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Fertilizer: Feed in early spring with a balanced slow-release shrub fertilizer according to the label. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which encourages leafy growth over fruit.
  • Pollination: This variety does not require a second plant to produce its berries, though pollinators will improve fruit set.
  • Harvest: The bright red berries are mainly ornamental and provide food for birds. They are not typically grown for fresh eating.

Container Planting

Grow in a large container (at least 18–24 inches wide) with drainage holes and quality potting mix. Water whenever the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry, as containers dry out faster than garden beds. Feed with a slow-release fertilizer each spring.

FAQ

Common questions

Lo-Hugger™ Cranberry FAQs

1. Does Lo-Hugger™ Cranberry need another plant to produce berries?

Lo-Hugger™ Cranberry is self-pollinating, but planting more than one cranberry nearby can improve pollination and often results in a heavier berry harvest. Bees and other pollinators help increase fruit production during bloom.

2. When can I harvest the berries?

The bright red berries are typically ready to harvest in fall once they have developed their full color. If left on the plant, many berries will persist well into winter, providing long-lasting seasonal interest. Harvest them for fresh eating, homemade jams, jellies, sauces, or baking.

3. Where does Lo-Hugger™ Cranberry grow best?

This low-growing cranberry thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, acidic, well-drained soil. It's an excellent choice for borders, slopes, woodland gardens, naturalized areas, and mass plantings where it can spread into a colorful groundcover.

4. Can I grow Lo-Hugger™ Cranberry in a container?

Yes. Lo-Hugger™ Cranberry grows well in large containers with acidic potting soil and consistent moisture. Its compact, spreading habit and colorful foliage make it an attractive option for patios, porches, and other outdoor living spaces where you can enjoy both the foliage and berries up close.

5. Does Lo-Hugger™ Cranberry provide year-round interest?

Absolutely. During the growing season, it forms a dense mat of deep green foliage. As temperatures cool, the leaves transition to rich mahogany-red, while the bright red berries often remain on the plant well into winter, providing months of color even after many other plants have gone dormant.
