AboutOrnamental Trees
The yard's lead actor. Ornamental trees stay smaller than their shade-tree cousins, which means they fit where bigger trees can't — entryways, courtyards, narrow side yards, that one bare corner.
What they lack in size they make up for in personality: showy bark, unusual leaf shapes, layered branching, and standout fall color. Plant one as a focal point and the rest of the bed designs itself around it.
Browse Japanese maples, dogwoods, redbuds, and other compact favorites — all grown at our York, SC nursery and shipped landscape-ready.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as an ornamental tree?
Ornamental trees are smaller — usually under 25–30 feet at maturity — and chosen mainly for visual interest like flowers, bark, leaf shape, or fall color rather than shade or timber.
Where should I plant an ornamental tree?
They shine as focal points: near entryways, in courtyards, beside patios, or anchoring a mixed bed. Most prefer well-drained soil and at least a half day of sun.
How big do ornamental trees get?
Most stay between 10 and 25 feet tall, which makes them a safe pick for smaller yards and tight spots near the house. Always check the mature size on each product page before planting.
