About this plant

Why you'll love it

Brilliant red, gold-centered blooms that open in late fall and carry color straight through the holidays, when almost nothing else in the garden is flowering.

The Yuletide Camellia (Camellia sasanqua 'Yuletide') is a glossy, broadleaf evergreen prized for its perfectly timed show. Single, fire-engine-red flowers with a striking boss of bright yellow stamens open from fall into winter, set against dense, lustrous dark green foliage that looks polished year round. It matures into a handsome upright shrub of roughly 8 to 10 feet tall and wide, with a naturally tidy form that takes well to shaping. Whether grown as a specimen, a screen, or an espalier against a warm wall, it brings structure in every season and a burst of warmth exactly when the landscape needs it most.

Why growers choose the Yuletide

  • Off-season bloom. Flowers arrive fall to winter, filling the gap after most shrubs have finished and giving pollinators a late nectar source.
  • Vivid color. Single, true-red petals frame a golden center for clean, high-contrast flowers that read beautifully from a distance.
  • Evergreen all year. Thick, glossy dark green leaves hold through winter, providing reliable structure and a living backdrop for the blooms.
  • Adaptable to sun. Sasanqua camellias tolerate more sun than their japonica cousins, thriving in full to part sun in zones 7 to 9.
  • Versatile form. Upright and dense, it works as a hedge, a foundation anchor, an espalier, or a standout specimen with minimal fuss.

Plant it where its winter color earns its keep: flanking an entry, lining a property edge as an evergreen screen, anchoring a mixed shrub border, or trained flat against a fence or wall in a courtyard. In a pollinator garden it offers welcome late-season nectar long after the summer flowers have faded.

Plant guide

Planting & care

Yuletide Camellia is hardy outdoors in USDA zones 7 to 9 and grows best in full to part sun. Like all camellias, it wants rich, acidic, consistently moist but well-drained soil; heavy clay or soggy ground will cause root problems, so improve drainage before planting.

Planting

  1. Choose a site with full to part sun and protection from harsh, drying winter wind; morning sun with light afternoon shade is ideal in the warmer end of its range.
  2. Work plenty of organic matter into acidic, well-draining soil; if your soil is alkaline or heavy, amend generously or plant in a raised bed or large container.
  3. Dig the hole twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper than the ball itself.
  4. Set the plant so the root flare sits slightly above grade, then backfill and water in thoroughly to settle the soil and remove air pockets.
  5. Apply 2 to 3 inches of mulch over the root zone to keep roots cool and moist, keeping the mulch pulled back a few inches from the stems.

Care & maintenance

  • Water. Keep the soil evenly moist during the first two growing seasons. Camellias have shallow roots and resent drying out, especially while setting and opening buds in fall.
  • Feed. Use an acid-forming fertilizer made for camellias, azaleas, and rhododendrons (a holly-tone type). Feed lightly in spring after bloom and again in early summer; avoid late-season feeding that pushes tender growth.
  • Light. Full to part sun produces the heaviest bloom; in hot climates, give it relief from intense afternoon sun.
  • Prune. This camellia blooms on old wood, so prune right after flowering finishes in late winter to early spring. Shape lightly, remove dead or crossing branches, and it will have all season to set next year's buds.
  • Mulch & winter care. Maintain a steady mulch layer year round. In the colder edge of zone 7, site it in a sheltered spot to protect buds and evergreen foliage from drying winter wind and sudden freezes.
  • Pests & disease. Generally trouble-free. Watch for tea scale on leaf undersides, aphids on new growth, and root rot in poorly drained soil; good drainage and air circulation prevent most issues.

FAQ

Common questions

When does the Yuletide Camellia bloom and how long does it last?

It flowers from fall into winter, typically peaking around the holidays in much of its range. As a sasanqua camellia it produces waves of single red blooms over several weeks, giving you color through a season when little else is flowering.

Why isn't my camellia blooming?

The most common causes are pruning at the wrong time, too much shade, or drought stress. Because this camellia sets its buds on old wood, pruning in summer or fall removes next season's flowers. Make sure it gets enough sun, stays evenly watered through bud set in fall, and isn't over-fertilized, which can favor leaves over flowers.

When and how should I prune it?

Prune right after it finishes blooming, in late winter to early spring. That gives the plant the whole growing season to form buds for next winter. Keep pruning light: shape the outline and remove any dead or crossing branches rather than cutting hard.

Does it grow in sun or shade?

Sasanqua camellias like this one take more sun than the spring-blooming japonica types. It performs well in full to part sun. In hot southern gardens, a spot with morning sun and some afternoon shade keeps the foliage and blooms looking their best.

Is it good for pollinators?

Yes. Its open, single flowers with prominent golden stamens are easy for bees to access, and because they appear in fall and winter they offer a valuable late-season nectar source when most other blooms are gone.

Can I grow it as a hedge or in a container?

Both work well. Its dense, upright habit and evergreen foliage make it an excellent informal hedge or screen, and it can also be espaliered against a wall. For containers, use a large pot with acidic, well-draining mix, water consistently, and in the colder part of zone 7 give it a sheltered location for winter.
