How to Plant Wittem Dahlia Bulbs
Dahlias are stunning flowers that thrive in sunny locations and well-draining soil. Wittem Dahlias, with their elegant blooms, require proper care to grow strong and healthy. Follow these steps to plant and care for your bulbs.
Planting Instructions
- When to Plant: Plant Dahlia bulbs (tubers) in spring after the last frost when the soil temperature is above 60°F (15°C).
- Location: Choose a sunny spot with at least 6-8 hours of sunlight daily.
- Soil Preparation: Ensure the soil is well-draining and rich in organic matter. If needed, mix compost or aged manure into the soil.
- Planting Depth and Spacing:
- Dig a hole 1-2 inches deep.
- Place the tuber horizontally with the "eye" or growth bud facing up.
- Watering: Water initially, but then do not water again until you see sprouts (usually 1-2 weeks). Overwatering tubers can cause rotting.
Care Instructions
- Watering: Once the plant emerges, water deeply 2-3 times a week, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
- Fertilization: Use a low-nitrogen fertilizer (e.g., 5-10-10) every 3-4 weeks once the plant is growing actively.
- Staking: Tall Dahlias may need staking for support. Insert a stake when planting to avoid damaging roots later.
- Deadheading: Regularly remove spent blooms to encourage more flowers.
Container Planting
- Choose a large pot (at least 12-16 inches in diameter) with drainage holes.
- Use well-draining potting soil mixed with compost.
- Follow the same planting depth and care guidelines as above.
