Winter Gold Juniper
Winter Gold Juniper is a low-growing, spreading evergreen with bright golden foliage in winter and yellow-green growth during the growing season. It is drought-tolerant once established and works well as a groundcover, on slopes, or in foundation plantings.
Planting & Care
- Light: Plant in full sun (6+ hours daily) for the best color and dense growth.
- Soil: Use well-drained soil. Avoid areas that stay wet, as junipers are susceptible to root rot.
- Planting: Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and no deeper than the root ball. Position the top of the root ball level with or slightly above the surrounding soil. Backfill with native soil and water thoroughly to settle the soil.
- Watering: Water deeply immediately after planting. For the first 2 weeks, water every 2–3 days if there is no rain. For the next 2–3 months, water once or twice weekly. After establishment (about one growing season), water only during extended dry periods.
- Mulch: Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the plant, keeping it a few inches away from the stem.
- Fertilizer: Feed lightly in early spring with a balanced, slow-release shrub fertilizer if needed. Avoid excessive fertilization.
- Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or stray branches. Do not cut back into old, leafless wood.
- Pollination & Harvesting: Pollination is not needed for ornamental use, and there is no harvest. Female plants may produce small bluish berry-like cones that provide wildlife value.
- Container Planting: Grow in a large container with drainage holes using a well-draining potting mix. Water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry, as containers dry out faster than garden beds.
