White Cloud Muhly Grass (Muhlenbergia capillaris 'White Cloud')
White Cloud Muhly Grass is a drought-tolerant ornamental grass prized for its airy white flower plumes in fall. Plant in full sun for best flowering.
How to Plant
- Choose a location with at least 6 hours of direct sun daily.
- Use well-drained soil. Avoid areas that stay wet.
- Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and the same depth.
- Remove the plant from its container and loosen circling roots.
- Place the plant so the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil.
- Backfill with native soil and gently firm it.
- Water deeply immediately after planting.
- Space plants 3–4 feet apart to allow mature growth.
Watering
- Weeks 1–2: Water deeply every 2–3 days.
- Weeks 3–8: Water deeply once or twice per week, depending on rainfall.
- After establishment (about 3 months): Water only during extended dry periods.
- Apply water slowly at the base to soak the entire root zone 6–8 inches deep.
- Add 2–3 inches of mulch around the plant, keeping it a few inches away from the crown.
Fertilizer & Maintenance
- Usually needs little or no fertilizer.
- If desired, apply a light, balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring.
- Cut foliage back to 6–8 inches above ground in late winter before new growth begins.
Container Planting
- Use a container with drainage holes at least 18–24 inches wide.
- Fill with a well-draining potting mix.
- Water more frequently than plants in the ground, but do not keep soil constantly wet.
Pollination is not required. The plant is grown primarily for ornamental foliage and flower display.
