Maroon Swoon® Weigela is hardy in zones 4 to 7 and flowers best in full to part sun. It is not fussy about soil but performs strongest in moist, well-drained ground enriched with organic matter.
Planting
- Choose a site with full to part sun; more sun means more abundant bloom and the deepest leaf color.
- Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and no deeper, loosening the surrounding soil to encourage roots to spread.
- Set the plant so the top of the root ball sits level with the surrounding soil; avoid planting too deep.
- Backfill with native soil amended with compost, firm gently, and water thoroughly to settle the roots and remove air pockets.
- Apply 2 to 3 inches of mulch over the root zone, keeping it pulled back a few inches from the stems.
Care & maintenance
- Water. Keep the soil evenly moist the first growing season while roots establish; once established it tolerates average moisture and brief dry spells.
- Feed. Apply a balanced, slow-release shrub fertilizer in early spring as new growth begins; avoid heavy late-season feeding.
- Light. Full to part sun; the more sun it receives, the heavier the bloom and richer the foliage.
- Prune. Weigela blooms on old wood, so prune right after the spring flowering finishes. Remove spent, weak, or crossing stems and shape lightly; pruning in late winter or early spring removes the buds and sacrifices bloom.
- Mulch & winter care. Maintain a steady mulch layer to conserve moisture and protect roots; no special winter protection is needed within its hardiness range.
- Pests & disease. Generally trouble-free. Watch for occasional aphids and, in humid conditions, leaf spot or powdery mildew; good air circulation and avoiding overhead watering keep it healthy.
