Planting Waterfall Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum var. dissectum ‘Waterfall’)
- Location: Partial shade is best (morning sun, afternoon protection). Avoid harsh wind.
- Soil: Well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Amend heavy clay with compost.
- Hole: Dig 2–3x wider than root ball, same depth. Do NOT plant deeper than it was in the pot.
- Set Plant: Loosen roots gently. Place so root flare is just above soil line.
- Backfill: Use native soil mixed with compost. Firm lightly—don’t compact.
- Water In: Soak thoroughly right after planting to remove air pockets.
- Mulch: 2–3 inches of mulch around base, keep 2 inches away from trunk.
Watering (Critical First Year)
- Week 1–4: Deep water 2–3x per week.
- Month 2–6: Once or twice weekly depending on heat.
- After establishment: Weekly deep soak during dry periods.
- Method: Slow, deep watering at root zone (soaker hose or trickle for 20–30 min).
Care & Maintenance
- Fertilizer: Light feeding in early spring with slow-release, low-nitrogen fertilizer.
- Pruning: Minimal. Remove dead or crossing branches in late winter.
- Protection: Shield from hot afternoon sun to prevent leaf scorch.
Container Planting (Great for Patios)
- Use large pot with drainage holes.
- High-quality potting mix (not garden soil).
- Water more frequently—containers dry faster.
- Protect roots in winter (insulate or move to sheltered spot).
This is a slow-growing, weeping tree—give it space to spread and don’t rush its shape.
