Tamukeyama Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum var. dissectum ‘Tamukeyama’)
This is a laceleaf, weeping maple that thrives with careful planting and consistent moisture.
Planting Steps
- Location: Partial shade is best (morning sun, afternoon shade). Protect from strong wind.
- Soil: Well-draining, slightly acidic soil. Avoid heavy clay unless amended.
- Hole: Dig 2–3× wider than the root ball, same depth. Do NOT plant deeper than it sat in the pot.
- Set Plant: Loosen roots gently. Place so root flare is just above soil level.
- Backfill: Use native soil mixed with compost (about 20–30%). Firm lightly.
- Water In: Soak deeply immediately after planting to remove air pockets.
- Mulch: 2–3 inches of mulch, keep 2 inches away from trunk.
Watering (Critical)
- First 2 weeks: Water every 2–3 days, slow deep soak.
- Next 2–3 months: 1–2 times per week depending on weather.
- After establishment (1 year): Weekly deep watering in dry periods.
- Always water at the base—avoid wetting leaves.
Ongoing Care
- Fertilizer: Light feeding in early spring with balanced slow-release fertilizer. Do not over-fertilize.
- Pruning: Minimal. Remove dead or crossing branches in late winter.
- Protection: Avoid hot afternoon sun and drying winds to prevent leaf scorch.
Container Planting
- Use a large pot with drainage holes.
- High-quality potting mix (not garden soil).
- Water more frequently—containers dry out faster.
- Winter: Protect roots from freezing (move or insulate pot).
Keep soil evenly moist, not soggy. Consistency is the key to keeping foliage vibrant.
