Sunjoy Gold Pillar® Barberry
Planting: Plant in full sun for the brightest golden foliage (6+ hours daily). It tolerates partial shade, but the color may be less vibrant. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and the same depth. Place the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil. Backfill with the native soil, firm gently, and water thoroughly to eliminate air pockets. Add 2–3 inches of mulch around the plant, keeping it a few inches away from the stems.
Watering: Water deeply immediately after planting. For the first 2 weeks, water every 2–3 days if there is no rain. For the next 2–3 months, water once or twice a week, soaking the root zone each time. After establishment (about one growing season), water only during extended dry periods.
Fertilizing: Apply a balanced slow-release shrub fertilizer in early spring, following the label directions. Avoid excessive fertilizer, which can encourage weak growth.
Care: This upright, columnar shrub is drought tolerant once established and adapts to most well-drained soils. Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or damaged branches or lightly shape if needed. Wear gloves, as the stems have sharp thorns.
Pollination & Wildlife: Small spring flowers attract pollinators. Red berries may develop in fall and can provide food for birds.
Container Growing: Grow in a container at least 18–24 inches wide with drainage holes. Use a quality potting mix, water whenever the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry, and fertilize lightly each spring. In cold climates, protect the container from repeated freeze-thaw cycles or move it to a sheltered location.
