Stella de Oro Daylily (Hemerocallis)
Stella de Oro is a compact, reblooming daylily that produces golden-yellow flowers from late spring through fall. It is easy to grow and thrives in full sun.
Planting Instructions
- Choose a location with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
- Loosen the soil 12 inches deep and mix in compost if needed.
- Dig a hole twice as wide as the root mass and deep enough so the crown sits about 1 inch below the soil surface.
- Spread the roots outward and backfill with soil.
- Firm the soil gently and water thoroughly to eliminate air pockets.
- Space plants 18–24 inches apart.
Watering
- Immediately after planting, soak the root zone deeply.
- For the first 2 weeks, water every 2–3 days if there is no rain.
- For the next 4–6 weeks, water deeply once or twice per week.
- After establishment, provide about 1 inch of water weekly during dry periods.
- Water at the base of the plant rather than overhead.
Care & Maintenance
- Apply 2–3 inches of mulch, keeping it away from the crown.
- Fertilize lightly in spring with a balanced slow-release fertilizer.
- Remove spent flower stalks to encourage reblooming.
- Divide clumps every 3–5 years if flowering decreases.
Container Growing
- Use a container at least 12–16 inches wide with drainage holes.
- Fill with quality potting mix.
- Water more frequently than in-ground plants, especially during hot weather.
- Fertilize monthly with a balanced liquid fertilizer during the growing season.
Harvesting
Daylilies are primarily ornamental. Remove faded blooms regularly to keep plants looking tidy and flowering heavily.
