Sprinter® Boxwood Planting & Care
Light: Plant in a location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. It will tolerate partial shade, especially in the afternoon.
Planting
- Choose a site with well-drained soil and keep the shrub away from downspouts or areas where water collects.
- Dig a hole only as deep as the root ball and about twice as wide.
- Place the shrub so the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil.
- Backfill with the native soil, gently firming it to remove large air pockets without packing it tightly.
- Water deeply immediately after planting to help settle the soil around the roots.
- Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base, keeping it a few inches away from the stems.
Watering
- During the first year, water deeply once a week if rainfall is insufficient.
- Check the soil before watering. If the top 2–3 inches feel dry, water thoroughly.
- Water slowly at the base so moisture reaches the entire root ball.
- Avoid frequent, shallow watering, which encourages weak roots.
Fertilizing
- Perform a soil test before applying fertilizer.
- If fertilizer is recommended, apply it in spring as new growth begins. New growth appears as bright, light green leaves.
- Follow the fertilizer label rates to avoid overfeeding.
Container Planting
- Use a large container with drainage holes and a quality potting mix.
- Water when the top inch of potting mix feels dry, as containers dry out faster than garden soil.
- Apply mulch to help retain moisture, and protect the container from extreme winter cold if you live in a colder climate.
