About this plant

Why you'll love it

Months of pink blooms over electric, ever-shifting foliage that glows pineapple-gold, then flushes orange and red.

Pineapple Poprocks® Spiraea (Spiraea japonica 'Golden Jack') is a compact, fast-growing deciduous shrub that earns its place on color alone. New growth emerges in fiery tones of orange and red, matures to a bright pineapple-yellow, and turns up the warmth again in fall. From spring straight through to frost, clusters of rosy-pink flowers sit atop that glowing foliage, drawing in bees and butterflies. Staying a tidy 2 to 3 feet tall and wide, it has a neat mounded habit that needs almost no shaping, making it one of the easiest ways to add long-season color to a sunny spot.

Why growers choose Pineapple Poprocks

  • Color from spring to fall. Pink flower clusters bloom across the whole growing season, so there is rarely a dull moment in the bed.
  • Foliage that changes all year. Orange-red new growth ages to glowing yellow-gold, with a renewed warm flush in autumn for true multi-season interest.
  • Genuinely cold-hardy. Rated for USDA zones 3 through 8, it shrugs off harsh northern winters that stop many flowering shrubs.
  • Compact and low-fuss. A naturally rounded 2-to-3-foot habit holds its shape with minimal pruning, ideal for smaller yards and tighter plantings.
  • Pollinator magnet. The long bloom run keeps bees and butterflies visiting from spring well into fall.

Use it as a low informal hedge, a bright edge along a walkway or foundation, a repeated accent in a mixed border, or a standout in a large container. Wherever it lands in full sun, it delivers dependable color month after month.

Plant guide

Planting & care

Pineapple Poprocks® Spiraea is hardy in USDA zones 3 to 8 and performs best in full sun, which keeps both the foliage color and the flowering at their strongest. It is adaptable to most average, well-drained garden soils and tolerates a range of conditions once established.

Planting

  1. Choose a site with full sun (at least six hours daily) and good drainage; too much shade dulls the foliage color and reduces bloom.
  2. Dig a hole as deep as the root ball and about twice as wide to loosen the surrounding soil.
  3. Set the plant so the top of the root ball sits level with the surrounding ground, never deeper.
  4. Backfill with the native soil, firm gently to remove air pockets, and water thoroughly to settle the roots.
  5. Apply a 2-to-3-inch layer of mulch over the root zone to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, keeping the mulch pulled back a few inches from the stems.

Care & maintenance

  • Water. Keep soil evenly moist the first growing season while roots establish. Once settled, this spiraea is fairly drought tolerant and needs water mainly during prolonged dry spells.
  • Feed. Apply a balanced, slow-release shrub fertilizer once in early spring as new growth begins. Avoid heavy feeding, which pushes soft growth at the expense of flowers.
  • Light. Full sun produces the most vivid foliage color and the heaviest, longest bloom.
  • Prune. This spiraea blooms on new wood, so prune in late winter or early spring before growth starts. Cut the plant back by roughly one-third to encourage dense, fresh growth and strong flowering. A light shearing after the first bloom flush can tidy the plant and encourage repeat blooms.
  • Mulch & winter care. Refresh mulch annually to protect roots and hold moisture; no special winter protection is needed within its hardy range.
  • Pests & disease. Spiraea is largely trouble-free. Watch occasionally for aphids and spider mites, especially in hot, dry weather, and treat early with a strong spray of water or insecticidal soap if they appear.

FAQ

Common questions

When does it bloom and how long?

Pineapple Poprocks® flowers from spring all the way to fall, producing clusters of rosy-pink blooms across the growing season rather than in a single short burst. A light shearing after the first heavy flush helps keep new flowers coming.

Why isn't my spiraea blooming well?

The two most common causes are too little sun and pruning at the wrong time. This shrub needs full sun for its best flowering, and because it blooms on new wood, cutting it back in summer or fall removes the wood that would carry the next season's blooms. Over-feeding can also push leafy growth instead of flowers.

When and how should I prune it?

Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges, since it flowers on the current season's wood. Cutting the plant back by about one-third renews the shrub and encourages dense growth and heavy bloom. You can also lightly shear it after the first bloom flush to tidy the shape and prompt rebloom.

Does it grow in sun or shade?

Full sun is best. At least six hours of direct sun a day brings out the brightest orange, gold, and red foliage tones and keeps flowering at its peak. In too much shade the colors fade and blooming drops off.

Is it good for pollinators?

Yes. The long succession of pink flower clusters is a reliable draw for bees and butterflies from spring through fall, making it a useful choice for a pollinator-friendly garden.

Can I grow it as a low hedge or in a container?

Both work well. Its compact 2-to-3-foot mounded habit makes it a natural low informal hedge or walkway edge, and it also thrives in a large container with well-drained potting mix and regular water. Plant several about 2 feet apart for a continuous low hedge.
