Spindle Palm (Hyophorbe verschaffeltii) – Planting & Care
Planting in Ground
- Location: Full sun to partial shade. Needs warm climate (zones 10–11). Protect from frost.
- Soil: Well-draining sandy soil. Avoid heavy clay.
- Hole: Dig 2× as wide as root ball, same depth. Do not plant deeper than it was in the pot.
- Set Plant: Place upright, backfill with native soil (no heavy amendments). Firm gently.
- Watering (critical): Soak deeply immediately after planting. For first 2–3 months: water 2–3× per week, letting top 2–3 inches dry slightly between waterings. After establishment: 1× per week.
Container Planting (Patio Option)
- Pot: Large container with drainage holes.
- Soil Mix: Palm mix or 50% potting soil + 25% sand + 25% perlite.
- Water: Water until it drains out the bottom. Check often—containers dry faster.
- Light: Full sun preferred.
Ongoing Care
- Fertilizer: Use a slow-release palm fertilizer (8-2-12 or similar) 3× per year (spring, summer, early fall).
- Watering: Keep consistent moisture but never soggy. Overwatering = root rot.
- Mulch: 2–3 inches around base, keep away from trunk.
- Pruning: Remove only fully brown fronds.
- Cold Protection: Cover or move container plants if temps drop below 40°F (4°C).
Notes
Slow-growing palm with a swollen trunk. No harvesting needed. Watch for nutrient deficiencies (yellowing = magnesium or potassium issue).
