Skyrocket Juniper (Juniperus scopulorum 'Skyrocket')
Skyrocket Juniper is a narrow, upright evergreen that grows about 15–20 feet tall and 2–3 feet wide. It performs best in full sun and well-drained soil.
Planting
- Choose a location with at least 6–8 hours of direct sun.
- Dig a hole 2–3 times wider than the root ball, but no deeper than the root ball's height.
- Set the plant so the top of the root ball is level with or slightly above the surrounding soil.
- Backfill with the native soil and gently firm it to remove air pockets. Avoid adding large amounts of compost to the planting hole.
- Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base, keeping mulch 2–3 inches away from the trunk.
Watering
- Water deeply immediately after planting until the entire root ball and surrounding soil are soaked.
- For the first 2 weeks: water every 2–3 days if there is no significant rainfall.
- Weeks 3–12: water once or twice per week, soaking the root zone each time.
- After the first growing season: water only during extended dry periods. Avoid constantly wet soil.
Care
- Fertilize lightly in early spring with a slow-release balanced fertilizer if growth is poor.
- Prune only to remove dead or damaged branches. Avoid cutting into old, brown wood, as it rarely regrows.
- No pollination is needed for ornamental use. Female plants may produce small blue berry-like cones if a male juniper is nearby.
- This plant is deer resistant, drought tolerant once established, and requires little maintenance.
Container Planting
Young Skyrocket Junipers can be grown in a large container with drainage holes using a well-draining potting mix. Water when the top 2–3 inches of soil are dry, and move to the landscape as the plant outgrows the container.
