How to Plant Shenandoah Switch Grass
- Choose a spot with full sun for best color and strong growth.
- Works in most soil types, including clay, as long as the area is not constantly dry.
- Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and the same depth.
- Place the plant so the top of the root ball sits level with the surrounding soil.
- Backfill with native soil and press gently to remove air pockets.
- Water deeply immediately after planting.
Watering
During the first growing season, water deeply 2–3 times per week depending on heat and rainfall. Soak the soil 6–8 inches deep rather than giving light daily watering. Once established, Shenandoah Switch Grass tolerates mild drought, but it performs best with occasional deep watering during long dry periods.
Fertilizer & Maintenance
- In late winter or early spring, cut old foliage down to 4–6 inches before new growth starts.
- Apply a balanced general-purpose fertilizer at that time.
- Mulch lightly around the base to help retain moisture and reduce weeds.
- Divide clumps every few years if plants become crowded.
Container Planting
Use a large container with drainage holes and quality potting mix. Containers dry out faster, so check moisture often and water thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry.
