Sea Green Juniper
Sea Green Juniper is a hardy, low-maintenance evergreen shrub with graceful, arching branches. It works well as a foundation plant, hedge, or accent and is drought tolerant once established.
Planting
- Choose a location with full sun (6+ hours daily) and well-drained soil.
- Dig a hole 2–3 times wider than the root ball but no deeper than the root ball's height.
- Place the shrub so the top of the root ball sits level with or slightly above the surrounding soil.
- Backfill with the native soil, gently firming it to remove air pockets. Do not add fertilizer to the planting hole.
- Apply 2–3 inches of mulch over the root zone, keeping mulch a few inches away from the trunk.
Watering
- Water deeply immediately after planting.
- For the first 2 weeks, water every 2–3 days if there is no significant rainfall.
- Weeks 3–12: Water once or twice per week, soaking the root zone 8–12 inches deep.
- After the first growing season, water only during extended dry periods.
Care
- Fertilize in early spring with a slow-release fertilizer formulated for trees and shrubs if growth is poor.
- Prune only to remove dead or damaged branches or to lightly shape. Avoid cutting back into old, brown wood, as it may not regrow.
- No pollination is required for ornamental use.
- This shrub is not grown for harvest.
Container Growing
Sea Green Juniper can be grown in a large container (at least 20–24 inches wide) with excellent drainage. Use a well-draining potting mix, water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry, and protect the roots from extreme winter cold in very cold climates.
