How to Plant and Care for a Schefflera (Umbrella Plant)
Schefflera is a popular, low-maintenance houseplant known for its glossy, umbrella-like leaf clusters. It can also be grown outdoors in warm climates (Zones 10–12). Here's how to get it planted and thriving:
Planting Instructions
- Container: Choose a pot 2" wider than the current rootball, with drainage holes.
- Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix—cactus/succulent mix works well. Add perlite for extra drainage.
- Planting:
- Fill the bottom of the container with soil.
- Gently remove Schefflera from its old pot, loosen roots slightly.
- Place in the new pot so the top of the rootball sits 1" below the rim.
- Backfill with soil and press gently to remove air pockets.
- Water: Water thoroughly until it drains out the bottom. Wait until the top inch of soil is dry before watering again.
Ongoing Care
- Light: Bright, indirect light. Too little light causes legginess; too much direct sun can scorch leaves.
- Watering: Keep soil lightly moist but never soggy. Reduce watering in winter.
- Humidity: Prefers 40–60% humidity. Mist occasionally or place near a pebble tray.
- Fertilizer: Feed every 4 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant fertilizer.
- Pruning: Prune to control size and encourage bushier growth. Always cut just above a leaf node.
Extra Tips
- Repot every 2–3 years in spring when roots become tight.
- Watch for pests like spider mites or mealybugs—wipe leaves and treat early.
- Rotate plant weekly to keep growth even.
