Planting Instructions
- Choose the Location: Select a spot with full sun to partial shade. It tolerates a range of soil types, including sandy or clay, but prefers slightly acidic, well-draining soil.
- Prepare the Hole: Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and equal to its height. This ensures good root spread.
- Planting: Place the tree in the hole, ensuring the root ball is level with the soil surface. Backfill with the soil you removed, gently tamping it down to eliminate air pockets.
- Water: Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil.
Watering
Water deeply 2-3 times per week for the first 2 months. After establishment, the dwarf palmetto is drought-tolerant, but periodic watering during dry spells will promote growth.
Fertilization
Fertilize in spring and midsummer with a slow-release palm fertilizer that contains magnesium and potassium. Avoid over-fertilizing to prevent salt buildup in the soil.
Container Planting
- Use a large container with drainage holes.
- Fill with a mix of potting soil and sand for drainage.
- Water consistently, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
Ongoing Care
- Prune only to remove dead or damaged fronds.
- Apply a layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
- Protect from frost with coverings in colder zones.
With minimal care, the dwarf palmetto adds lush greenery to your garden or patio!
