How to Plant and Care for Royal Cape® Plumbago
Planting Instructions
In-Ground Planting:
- Location: Choose a sunny spot with well-draining soil. Plumbago prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade.
- Soil Prep: Loosen the soil to a depth of 12 inches and mix in compost if the soil is poor.
- Digging the Hole: Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep.
- Planting: Place the plant in the hole, making sure the top of the root ball is level with the ground. Backfill with soil and press down gently.
- Watering: Water deeply right after planting and keep the soil evenly moist for the first few weeks.
Container Planting:
- Pot Selection: Use a container with drainage holes.
- Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix.
- Watering: Water when the top inch of soil feels dry.
Care and Maintenance
- Watering: Once established, water deeply once or twice a week. Drought-tolerant but benefits from regular watering in extreme heat.
- Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer (10-10-10) monthly during the growing season.
- Pruning: Trim lightly to control shape and encourage more blooms.
- Cold Protection: In zones below 9, bring containers indoors or protect with mulch.
Pollination and Blooming
Attracts butterflies and bees. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming.
