About this plant

Why you'll love it

A tidy little rose smothered in hot-pink, gumball-round buds that open to ruffled blooms from spring straight through fall.

Gumball Goody™ is a compact landscape rose built for color that simply will not quit. Round, candy-pink buds unfurl into full, ruffled flowers held above glossy green foliage, and the show repeats wave after wave from spring to the first hard frost. At just 2 to 3 feet tall and wide, it stays naturally rounded and well-behaved — no awkward gangly canes — making it one of the easiest roses to slot into a real garden. Tough from zone 3 through zone 9, it handles cold winters and hot summers alike while asking very little in return.

Why growers choose the Gumball Goody Rose

  • Nonstop color. Blooms continuously from spring to fall on new growth, so there is rarely a week without flowers.
  • Vivid hot-pink blooms. Gumball-round buds open to ruffled, saturated pink flowers that read from across the yard.
  • Exceptional cold-hardiness. Rated to zone 3, it survives winters that defeat most shrub roses.
  • Compact, rounded habit. A naturally mounded 2-to-3-foot form needs little shaping and fits tight spots and containers.
  • Clean, glossy foliage. Healthy green leaves stay attractive all season and resist the disease problems that plague older roses.

Use it as a low flowering hedge along a walkway, repeat it across a foundation planting for season-long color, tuck it into a mixed border or perennial bed, or grow it in a large patio container where its tidy size and constant bloom shine.

Plant guide

Planting & care

Gumball Goody™ is hardy in zones 3–9 and performs best in full sun — at least six hours of direct light a day — in fertile, well-drained soil. Good air circulation and steady light are the keys to the heaviest bloom and the cleanest foliage.

Planting

  1. Choose a full-sun site with well-drained soil and room for air to move around the plant.
  2. Dig a hole as deep as the root ball and about twice as wide, loosening the surrounding soil.
  3. Set the plant so the crown sits at or just slightly above the surrounding soil level.
  4. Backfill with the native soil amended with compost, firm gently, and water in thoroughly to settle out air pockets.
  5. Spread 2–3 inches of mulch over the root zone, keeping it pulled back a couple inches from the base of the canes.

Care & maintenance

  • Water. Keep the soil evenly moist the first season while roots establish; once settled, give a deep soak about weekly in dry spells. Water at the base, not overhead, to keep foliage dry.
  • Feed. Apply a balanced rose or general-purpose fertilizer in early spring as growth begins, and feed lightly again through summer to fuel repeat bloom. Stop feeding about six weeks before your first expected frost.
  • Light. Full sun produces the most flowers and the healthiest leaves; too much shade reduces bloom and invites disease.
  • Prune. Roses bloom on new wood — prune in late winter or early spring before growth starts. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing canes and cut back by about a third to shape and refresh. Light deadheading or a midsummer trim keeps it blooming.
  • Mulch & winter care. Maintain mulch year-round to conserve moisture and protect roots. In the coldest zones, add extra mulch over the base for winter insulation.
  • Pests & disease. Watch for aphids, blackspot, and powdery mildew. This variety carries strong disease resistance, but good airflow, base watering, and prompt cleanup of fallen leaves keep problems away.

FAQ

Common questions

When does it bloom and how long?

Gumball Goody™ blooms from spring all the way through fall, producing fresh waves of hot-pink flowers continuously until the first hard frost. Because it flowers on new growth, the more it grows through the season, the more it blooms.

Why isn't my rose blooming?

The most common causes are too little sun, pruning at the wrong time, or over-feeding. This rose needs at least six hours of direct sun, and since it blooms on new wood you should prune in late winter or early spring — cutting it back later removes developing flower buds. Excess nitrogen fertilizer also pushes leafy growth at the expense of blooms.

When and how should I prune it?

Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins, since flowers form on the current season's growth. Remove any dead or damaged canes, take out crossing stems, and cut the plant back by roughly a third to keep it tidy and vigorous. A light midseason deadhead encourages more flowers.

Does it grow in sun or shade?

Full sun. Plant it where it gets at least six hours of direct light each day. More sun means more flowers and healthier, disease-resistant foliage; in shade it blooms sparsely and is more prone to mildew.

How cold-hardy is it?

Very. Gumball Goody™ is hardy in USDA zones 3 through 9, making it one of the toughest shrub roses available. In the coldest zones, mounding extra mulch over the base for winter gives the roots added protection.

Can I grow it in a container or as a low hedge?

Yes to both. Its compact, rounded 2-to-3-foot habit is ideal for a large patio container with good drainage, and planted in a row it makes a colorful low flowering hedge along a path, bed edge, or foundation.
