Gumball Goody™ is hardy in zones 3–9 and performs best in full sun — at least six hours of direct light a day — in fertile, well-drained soil. Good air circulation and steady light are the keys to the heaviest bloom and the cleanest foliage.
Planting
- Choose a full-sun site with well-drained soil and room for air to move around the plant.
- Dig a hole as deep as the root ball and about twice as wide, loosening the surrounding soil.
- Set the plant so the crown sits at or just slightly above the surrounding soil level.
- Backfill with the native soil amended with compost, firm gently, and water in thoroughly to settle out air pockets.
- Spread 2–3 inches of mulch over the root zone, keeping it pulled back a couple inches from the base of the canes.
Care & maintenance
- Water. Keep the soil evenly moist the first season while roots establish; once settled, give a deep soak about weekly in dry spells. Water at the base, not overhead, to keep foliage dry.
- Feed. Apply a balanced rose or general-purpose fertilizer in early spring as growth begins, and feed lightly again through summer to fuel repeat bloom. Stop feeding about six weeks before your first expected frost.
- Light. Full sun produces the most flowers and the healthiest leaves; too much shade reduces bloom and invites disease.
- Prune. Roses bloom on new wood — prune in late winter or early spring before growth starts. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing canes and cut back by about a third to shape and refresh. Light deadheading or a midsummer trim keeps it blooming.
- Mulch & winter care. Maintain mulch year-round to conserve moisture and protect roots. In the coldest zones, add extra mulch over the base for winter insulation.
- Pests & disease. Watch for aphids, blackspot, and powdery mildew. This variety carries strong disease resistance, but good airflow, base watering, and prompt cleanup of fallen leaves keep problems away.
