Plant Red Pride bulbs in fall, once soil temperatures have cooled but before the ground freezes. They need that winter chill to bloom well in spring.
Unboxing
- Open right away. Remove bulbs from packaging and check that they are firm; loose papery skins are normal.
- Store cool and dry. If you cannot plant immediately, keep bulbs in a dark, well-ventilated spot between 50-60F for up to a few weeks.
Planting
- Pick a sunny spot. Full sun to partial shade with soil that drains freely; avoid low areas where water sits.
- Loosen the soil. Work the bed 8-10 inches deep and mix in compost if your soil is heavy clay.
- Set the depth. Plant bulbs 6 inches deep, pointed tip up, spaced 3-6 inches apart.
- Plant in groups. Cluster bulbs in drifts of 10 or more for the strongest color impact in borders.
- Backfill and water. Firm the soil over the bulbs and water once thoroughly to settle them in.
- Mulch lightly. Add 2 inches of mulch to moderate soil temperature and hold moisture.
Watering
- Keep it moderate. Water after planting, then let rainfall do the work through winter.
- Support the bloom. Provide about an inch of water per week during active spring growth and flowering.
- Ease off after bloom. Reduce watering once foliage yellows so bulbs can rest dry through summer.
Feeding
- Feed at planting. Mix a balanced bulb fertilizer or bone meal into the planting hole.
- Top-dress in spring. Apply a light balanced fertilizer as shoots emerge to fuel next year's flower bud.
After Bloom Care
- Deadhead spent flowers. Snip the flower stalk once petals drop to redirect energy to the bulb.
- Leave the leaves. Let foliage die back naturally and turn yellow before removing it.
- Cut for the vase. Harvest stems in the cool morning when buds are just showing color, and take as little foliage as possible.
Container Growing
- Use a deep pot. Choose a container at least 10-12 inches deep with drainage holes.
- Overwinter cold. Keep potted bulbs in an unheated garage or sheltered spot so they still get their chill period.
