Darwin Hybrid tulips are planted in fall for spring bloom. Your bulbs arrive dormant and firm, ready to go straight into the ground once soil temperatures cool.
Unboxing
- Open right away. Remove the bulbs from the packaging and let them breathe in a cool, dry, dark spot until planting.
- Check the bulbs. Firm bulbs with papery brown skins are healthy; loose skin and small blemishes are normal and will not affect bloom.
Planting
- Time it right. Plant in fall, roughly 4-6 weeks before your ground freezes, once nighttime temperatures are consistently cool.
- Pick a spot. Choose a site with sun to part shade and soil that drains freely. Tulips rot in soggy ground, so avoid low spots that hold water.
- Dig to depth. Set bulbs 6-8 inches deep, measured to the base of the bulb, with the pointed end facing up.
- Space them out. Allow 3-6 inches between bulbs. Plant in clusters of 10-15 for the fullest display.
- Backfill and water. Cover with soil, firm gently, and water once thoroughly to settle the bulbs and start root growth.
- Mulch lightly. Add 2 inches of mulch after the ground cools to moderate soil temperature over winter.
Watering
- Fall soak. Water once at planting, then only if fall is unusually dry.
- Spring growth. Keep soil evenly moist while shoots, foliage, and flowers develop.
- Summer rest. Stop supplemental watering after the foliage yellows; dormant bulbs prefer dry soil.
Feeding
- At planting. Mix a bulb fertilizer or bone meal into the bottom of the planting hole.
- Each spring. Scatter a balanced granular fertilizer as shoots emerge to support next year's flower buds.
After Bloom Care
- Deadhead spent flowers. Snip off faded blooms so energy goes back into the bulb instead of seed production.
- Leave the leaves. Let foliage yellow and wither naturally for about six weeks before removing it.
- Encourage perennializing. Good drainage, full sun, and yearly feeding give this variety the best chance of returning for multiple seasons.
Container Growing
- Use a deep pot. Choose a container at least 12 inches deep with drainage holes and well-draining potting mix.
- Plant close. Set bulbs 2-3 inches apart for a full, packed look.
- Protect in winter. Move pots to an unheated garage or shelter in zones 3-5 so bulbs chill without freezing solid.
