Red Balloon® Viburnum: Bright Berries, Beautiful Seasons

Red Balloon® Viburnum brings lasting beauty to the landscape with eye-catching color from spring through fall. Large, lacy white flower clusters blanket the plant in spring, followed by green berries that mature to brilliant red in late summer. Thick, leathery green foliage keeps this shrub looking polished throughout the growing season, while its dependable nature makes it a great choice for foundation plantings, mixed borders, woodland gardens, and privacy screens.

This adaptable shrub tolerates partial shade and is deer resistant, making it an easy addition to a wide range of landscapes. It will produce some berries on its own, but planting it near 'Mohican' or 'Alleghany' viburnum will result in a heavier fruit display. Red Balloon® Viburnum also grows well in large landscape containers while young, adding seasonal color to patios and outdoor living spaces.

Plant guide

Planting & care

Planting Red Balloon® Viburnum

Choose a location with full sun to partial shade (at least 4–6 hours of sun) and well-drained soil. This shrub grows about 6-8 feet tall and wide, so give it room to mature.

  • Dig a hole 2–3 times wider than the root ball and no deeper than the root ball's height.
  • Remove the plant from its container and gently loosen circling roots.
  • Place the top of the root ball level with or slightly above the surrounding soil.
  • Backfill with the native soil, gently firming as you go. Do not bury the crown.
  • Water slowly and deeply immediately after planting to soak the entire root ball and surrounding soil.
  • Add 2–3 inches of mulch over the root zone, keeping it 2–3 inches away from the stems.

Watering & Care

  • For the first 2 weeks, water deeply every 2–3 days if there is no significant rain.
  • For the next 2–3 months, water deeply once or twice a week, depending on heat and rainfall.
  • After establishment (about one year), water during extended dry periods.
  • Apply a slow-release balanced fertilizer in early spring if needed.
  • Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape.

Pollination & Harvest

Red Balloon® Viburnum produces spring flowers that attract bees and other pollinators. Bright red berries develop later in the season and often mature to darker shades. The berries are primarily ornamental and provide food for birds.

Container Growing

Grow in a large container (at least 20–24 inches wide) with drainage holes and quality potting mix. Water whenever the top 1–2 inches of soil become dry, as containers dry out faster than garden soil.

FAQ

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Does Red Balloon® Viburnum need a pollinator to produce berries?

Red Balloon® Viburnum will produce some berries on its own, but you'll enjoy a much heavier fruit display by planting it near a compatible pollinator like 'Mohican' or 'Alleghany' viburnum. The spring flowers also attract pollinators such as bees and other beneficial insects.

2. Where is the best place to plant Red Balloon® Viburnum?

This versatile shrub thrives in full sun to partial shade and works beautifully in foundation plantings, mixed borders, woodland gardens, hedges, and privacy screens. While young, it can also be grown in a large landscape container to bring seasonal color to patios and outdoor living spaces.

3. Are the berries edible, and can they be harvested?

The bright red berries are primarily valued for their ornamental appeal and for attracting birds to the garden. They are not not suitable for eating, so they are best left on the shrub to provide long-lasting seasonal interest and wildlife value.

4. Is Red Balloon® Viburnum deer resistant?

Yes. Red Balloon® Viburnum is considered deer resistant, making it a dependable choice for landscapes where deer browsing is a concern. While no plant is completely deer-proof, this variety is generally less appealing than many other shrubs.

5. What makes Red Balloon® Viburnum stand out throughout the year?

Red Balloon® Viburnum delivers interest in every season. Large white flower clusters brighten the garden in spring, green berries mature to vivid red in late summer, thick green foliage stays attractive through the growing season, and the leaves develop beautiful fall color for an extended display.
