About this plant

Why you'll love it

True-blue flowers all summer on a tidy 2-to-3-foot shrub that butterflies cannot resist.

Pugster Blue® (Buddleia davidii 'Pugster Blue') delivers the big, full flower clusters of an old-fashioned butterfly bush on a compact, well-branched frame that stays in scale with modern gardens. From early summer into fall it produces dense spikes of genuinely blue blooms with a small orange-yellow eye and a light honey fragrance, drawing a steady parade of butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. Its thick, sturdy stems give it better cold-hardiness than most dwarf types, and the gray-green foliage stays neat all season. At just 2 to 3 feet tall and wide, it suits the front of a border, a sunny foundation bed, or a large container without the leggy sprawl of older varieties.

Why growers choose the Pugster Blue®

  • Real blue color. Few shrubs offer a true blue; these full-size flower clusters read distinctly blue with a bright contrasting eye, not the washed-out lavender common in the genus.
  • Months of bloom. Flowering runs from summer well into fall on new growth, so the show keeps coming through the warmest part of the year.
  • Pollinator magnet. The nectar-rich, lightly fragrant spikes pull in butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds from morning to dusk.
  • Compact and well-built. A naturally dwarf 2-to-3-foot habit with thick stems means a fuller, more cold-tolerant plant that holds its shape without staking.
  • Tough and deer resistant. Hardy in zones 5-9, fast to establish, drought tolerant once settled, and reliably passed over by browsing deer.

Use Pugster Blue® as a low-maintenance anchor at the front of a mixed border, mass several for a low flowering hedge, tuck one into a sunny foundation planting, or feature it in a large patio container at the heart of a pollinator garden.

Plant guide

Planting & care

Pugster Blue® is hardy in zones 5-9 and performs best in full sun with average, well-drained soil. It is adaptable to most soil types and tolerates lean or dry ground once established, but sharp drainage is essential, as soggy roots are its main weakness.

Planting

  1. Choose a spot in full sun (at least six hours daily) with well-drained soil; good drainage matters more than soil richness.
  2. Dig a hole as deep as the root ball and about twice as wide to loosen the surrounding soil.
  3. Set the plant so the root flare sits level with the surrounding ground, never buried deeper than it grew in its container.
  4. Backfill with the native soil, firm gently to remove air pockets, and water in thoroughly to settle the roots.
  5. Apply a 2-to-3-inch layer of mulch over the root zone to conserve moisture, keeping it pulled back a few inches from the stems.

Care & maintenance

  • Water. Keep the soil evenly moist during the first growing season while roots establish. After that it is quite drought tolerant; water during extended dry spells but avoid leaving it standing wet.
  • Feed. Butterfly bush is a light feeder. A single application of balanced, slow-release shrub fertilizer in early spring is plenty; over-feeding produces lush leaves at the expense of flowers.
  • Light. Full sun gives the most blooms and the sturdiest habit. In too much shade the plant grows loose and flowers sparingly.
  • Prune. Butterfly bush blooms on new wood, so prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Cut the plant back hard, to roughly 12 inches or to a low framework, to encourage vigorous stems and abundant flowers. Do not prune in fall.
  • Mulch & winter care. Maintain mulch year-round to protect roots. In colder areas (zone 5), a deeper layer over the crown adds winter insurance; leave the old stems standing until spring and prune once hard frost has passed.
  • Pests & disease. Generally trouble-free. Spider mites can appear in hot, dry conditions, and poorly drained soil can cause root rot. Good drainage and air circulation prevent most problems.
  • Bloom tips. Pugster Blue® is largely self-cleaning, but removing spent flower spikes through the season keeps it tidy and encourages continued blooming into fall.

FAQ

Common questions

When does it bloom and for how long?

Pugster Blue® flowers from early summer into fall, giving you months of color through the warmest part of the season. Because it blooms on new growth, the display builds as summer progresses and continues until frost.

Why isn't my butterfly bush blooming?

The usual culprits are too much shade, too much fertilizer, or pruning at the wrong time. Butterfly bush blooms on new wood, so give it full sun, go easy on feeding, and prune in late winter or early spring rather than during the growing season, when you would be removing the wood that produces flowers.

When and how should I prune it?

Prune in late winter or early spring, before new growth emerges. Cut the whole plant back hard, to about 12 inches or a low framework. This shrub flowers on new wood, so a hard spring cut drives strong stems and the most blooms. Avoid fall pruning.

Does it need full sun or will it take shade?

Full sun is best, at least six hours of direct light a day. That produces the heaviest flowering and a compact, sturdy habit. In shade the plant grows leggy and blooms poorly.

Is it deer resistant and good for pollinators?

Yes on both counts. Deer typically pass it by, while its nectar-rich, lightly fragrant flower spikes are a reliable draw for butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds throughout the bloom season.

Can I grow it in a container or as a low hedge?

Its naturally dwarf 2-to-3-foot size makes it well suited to large containers and to massing as a low flowering hedge. In a pot, use a well-draining mix, water more attentively during heat, and ensure the container drains freely so the roots never sit in water.
