Pugster Blue® is hardy in zones 5-9 and performs best in full sun with average, well-drained soil. It is adaptable to most soil types and tolerates lean or dry ground once established, but sharp drainage is essential, as soggy roots are its main weakness.
Planting
- Choose a spot in full sun (at least six hours daily) with well-drained soil; good drainage matters more than soil richness.
- Dig a hole as deep as the root ball and about twice as wide to loosen the surrounding soil.
- Set the plant so the root flare sits level with the surrounding ground, never buried deeper than it grew in its container.
- Backfill with the native soil, firm gently to remove air pockets, and water in thoroughly to settle the roots.
- Apply a 2-to-3-inch layer of mulch over the root zone to conserve moisture, keeping it pulled back a few inches from the stems.
Care & maintenance
- Water. Keep the soil evenly moist during the first growing season while roots establish. After that it is quite drought tolerant; water during extended dry spells but avoid leaving it standing wet.
- Feed. Butterfly bush is a light feeder. A single application of balanced, slow-release shrub fertilizer in early spring is plenty; over-feeding produces lush leaves at the expense of flowers.
- Light. Full sun gives the most blooms and the sturdiest habit. In too much shade the plant grows loose and flowers sparingly.
- Prune. Butterfly bush blooms on new wood, so prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Cut the plant back hard, to roughly 12 inches or to a low framework, to encourage vigorous stems and abundant flowers. Do not prune in fall.
- Mulch & winter care. Maintain mulch year-round to protect roots. In colder areas (zone 5), a deeper layer over the crown adds winter insurance; leave the old stems standing until spring and prune once hard frost has passed.
- Pests & disease. Generally trouble-free. Spider mites can appear in hot, dry conditions, and poorly drained soil can cause root rot. Good drainage and air circulation prevent most problems.
- Bloom tips. Pugster Blue® is largely self-cleaning, but removing spent flower spikes through the season keeps it tidy and encourages continued blooming into fall.
