How to Plant and Care for Lily Bulbs
Planting Instructions
- Timing: Plant bulbs in early spring, as long as the soil is not frozen.
- Location: Choose a sunny spot (6+ hours of sunlight). Full sun to part shade is ideal.
- Soil: Well-drained, loamy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0). Add compost or sand for drainage if needed.
- Depth and Spacing: Dig a hole 6 inches deep. Space bulbs 9–12 inches apart. Place the bulb with the pointed side up.
- Watering: Water well after planting to settle the soil.
Care Instructions
- Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Water deeply when the top 1–2 inches of soil feels dry.
- Mulching: Apply 2–3 inches of mulch to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
- Fertilization: Use a balanced fertilizer (10-10-10) once shoots appear, and again as buds form.
- Staking: If growing in windy areas, use stakes to support stems as they grow taller.
- Deadheading: Remove spent blooms to encourage more flowers, but leave the foliage intact to feed the bulb.
- Winter Protection: In colder zones, apply a thick layer of mulch or straw after the first frost.
