Orange Rocket Barberry
Orange Rocket Barberry is a compact, upright shrub grown for its bright orange-red foliage, which matures to deep burgundy. It performs best in full sun and is drought tolerant once established.
Planting
- Choose a location with full sun (6+ hours daily) and well-drained soil.
- Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and the same depth as the container.
- Remove the plant from its pot, loosen circling roots, and place it so the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil.
- Backfill with the native soil, gently firming it to eliminate air pockets.
- Water slowly and deeply immediately after planting.
- Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base, keeping it a few inches away from the stems.
Watering
- Water deeply 2–3 times per week for the first 2 weeks.
- Then water once or twice weekly for the next 2–3 months, depending on rainfall and heat.
- After establishment (about one growing season), water only during extended dry periods.
- Each watering should thoroughly soak the root zone rather than lightly wetting the surface.
Care
- Fertilize in early spring with a balanced slow-release shrub fertilizer if growth is weak.
- Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape or remove dead branches.
- No pollination is needed for ornamental value.
- Watch for aphids or powdery mildew, though this shrub is generally low maintenance.
Container Growing
Use a pot at least 18–20 inches wide with drainage holes and a quality potting mix. Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry, as containers dry out faster than garden soil. In colder climates, protect the pot from repeated freeze-thaw cycles or move it to a sheltered location during winter.
