Wilson Northern Charm™ Boxwood
Wilson Northern Charm™ is a cold-hardy, evergreen boxwood with a naturally rounded shape. It grows about 2-3 feet tall and wide and performs well in full sun to partial shade.
Planting
- Choose well-drained soil. Avoid areas that stay wet.
- Dig a hole 2–3 times wider than the root ball but no deeper than the root ball.
- Set the top of the root ball level with or slightly above the surrounding soil.
- Backfill with the native soil and gently firm it to remove air pockets. Do not heavily amend the planting hole.
- Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the plant, keeping mulch 2–3 inches away from the stems.
Watering
- Water thoroughly immediately after planting until the entire root ball and surrounding soil are saturated.
- For the first 2 weeks, water every 2–3 days if there is no significant rain.
- For the next 2–3 months, water deeply once or twice a week, depending on weather and soil.
- After establishment (about one year), water during extended dry periods. Deep, infrequent watering encourages strong roots.
Care
- Fertilize in early spring with a slow-release balanced shrub fertilizer if needed.
- Prune lightly in late spring or early summer to maintain shape. Avoid heavy pruning in late fall.
- No pollinator is needed, and there is no harvest.
- Protect from drying winter winds in colder regions and water well before the ground freezes.
Container Growing
Grow in a container at least 18–24 inches wide with drainage holes. Use a quality potting mix, water whenever the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry, and protect the container from extreme winter cold since roots are less insulated than plants in the ground.
