How to Plant North Pole® Arborvitae
Light: Plant in full sun (6+ hours) for the best dense growth. It tolerates partial shade but may become less compact.
- Dig a hole 2–3 times wider than the root ball and no deeper than the root ball's height.
- Place the plant so the top of the root ball is level with or slightly above the surrounding soil.
- Backfill with the original soil, gently firming it to remove air pockets. Do not add fertilizer to the planting hole.
- Water thoroughly immediately after planting to soak the entire root ball and surrounding soil.
- Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base, keeping it 2–3 inches away from the trunk.
Watering
- Weeks 1–2: Water every day or every other day if there is no significant rain, soaking the root ball deeply.
- Weeks 3–12: Water 2–3 times per week, depending on weather.
- After the first growing season: Water deeply once a week during dry periods.
- Check moisture by inserting your finger 2–3 inches into the soil. Water when it feels dry at that depth.
Care & Maintenance
- Fertilize in early spring with a slow-release fertilizer formulated for trees and shrubs after the plant is established.
- Pruning is rarely needed; trim lightly in late spring if shaping is desired. Do not cut into old, brown wood.
- This arborvitae does not require pollination to provide its ornamental value.
- It grows about 10–15 feet tall and 3–5 feet wide, making it an excellent narrow privacy screen. Space plants 3–5 feet apart, depending on how quickly you want the screen to fill in.
Container Planting
North Pole® Arborvitae can be grown in a large container (at least 24 inches wide with drainage holes). Use a quality potting mix, water more frequently than in-ground plants, and protect the roots from extreme winter cold if you live in a cold climate.
