Planting Miss Kim Lilac (Syringa patula 'Miss Kim')
Best location: Plant in full sun (at least 6 hours daily) with well-drained soil. Space plants 5–7 feet apart.
- Dig a hole 2–3 times wider than the root ball but no deeper than the root ball's height.
- Remove the plant from its container and gently loosen circling roots.
- Place the shrub so the top of the root ball is level with or slightly above the surrounding soil.
- Backfill with the original soil, gently firming it to remove air pockets. Avoid adding large amounts of compost to the planting hole.
- Water slowly and deeply immediately after planting until the root ball and surrounding soil are thoroughly soaked.
- Add 2–3 inches of mulch around the base, keeping it 2–3 inches away from the stems.
Care
- Watering: For the first month, water deeply 2–3 times per week if there is no significant rain. After that, water once a week during the first growing season. Water slowly so moisture reaches 8–12 inches deep.
- Fertilizer: Skip fertilizer at planting. Beginning the following spring, apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer if growth is weak.
- Pruning: Prune immediately after flowering to shape the shrub. Avoid heavy pruning in late summer or fall, as next year's flower buds form soon after blooming.
- Pollination: Miss Kim lilac does not require another lilac to bloom, but bees and butterflies will improve pollination and benefit the garden.
- Blooming: Expect fragrant lavender flowers in late spring, followed by attractive dark green foliage that develops burgundy-red fall color.
Container Planting
Use a container at least 20–24 inches wide with drainage holes. Fill with a high-quality potting mix, water whenever the top 2 inches become dry, and protect the roots from extreme winter cold in colder climates.
