About this plant

Why you'll love it

Double the Ruffles, Double the Spring Color

Kiwi Sunset is a New Zealand original with a bloom form you won't find in the average daffodil patch. Sunshine yellow perianths open around a fully double, ruffled center of deep orange-red, with slender yellow petals pushing through the frills for a sunset effect that reads from across the yard.

Strong, sturdy stems hold each 14 to 16 inch flower upright through spring weather, so blooms stay visible instead of flopping into the mulch. Plant them in small clusters along a border, tuck them between emerging perennials, or fill a patio container for early color where garden beds are in short supply. They return on their own every spring, and deer and rabbits generally leave them alone.

Why You'll Love the Kiwi Sunset Daffodil

  • Fully double, ruffled blooms in yellow and deep orange-red for a look far beyond standard daffodils
  • Strong stems keep flowers upright and facing out, even after spring rain
  • Cold hardy in zones 3-8 and returns year after year with no digging or replanting
  • Compact 4 to 6 inch footprint, ideal for borders, small-space gardens, and containers
  • Naturally resistant to deer and rabbit browsing

Plant a handful of clusters this fall and mid-spring takes care of itself.

Plant guide

Planting & care

Daffodil bulbs are planted in fall while the soil is still workable, then bloom the following spring. Unpack your bulbs as soon as they arrive and keep them cool, dry, and out of direct sun until planting day.

Planting

  1. Pick your spot. Choose a site with full sun to part shade and soil that drains freely. Standing water is the one thing daffodils will not tolerate.
  2. Loosen the soil. Work the top 8 to 10 inches, mixing in compost if your ground is heavy clay or very sandy.
  3. Set the depth. Plant each bulb 6 inches deep, pointed tip up and flat root plate down.
  4. Space for clusters. Keep bulbs 4 to 6 inches apart and plant in groups of 5 or more for the best display in a border.
  5. Backfill and water. Firm the soil over the bulbs and water once thoroughly to settle everything in.
  6. Mulch lightly. Add 1 to 2 inches of mulch in colder zones to buffer temperature swings.

Container Planting

  • Use a deep pot. Choose a container at least 10 inches deep with open drainage holes and quality potting mix.
  • Plant closer together. Bulbs can sit 2 to 3 inches apart in pots for a fuller look.
  • Overwinter cold. In zones 3-6, move potted bulbs to an unheated garage or shelter so they get chilling without freezing solid.

Watering

  • Spring growth. Keep soil evenly moist while foliage and flowers are active, about 1 inch of water per week including rain.
  • Summer dormancy. Stop supplemental watering once leaves yellow. Dry summer soil is exactly what the bulbs want.

Feeding

  • At planting. Mix a low-nitrogen bulb fertilizer or bone meal into the planting hole.
  • Each spring. Scatter bulb food over the bed as shoots emerge, then water it in.

After Bloom Care

  • Deadhead spent flowers. Snip off faded blooms so energy goes back to the bulb.
  • Leave the leaves. Let foliage yellow and die back naturally for at least 6 weeks before removing it. That is how next year's flowers are built.
  • Divide when crowded. Every 4 to 5 years, lift clumps after foliage fades and replant the offsets at the same depth.

FAQ

Common questions

When should I plant Kiwi Sunset Daffodil bulbs?

Plant in fall, roughly 4 to 6 weeks before your ground freezes. The bulbs need a cold period over winter and will bloom in mid spring.

How many bulbs come in a pack and what size are they?

Each pack contains 5 bulbs sized 12-14 cm, which is a strong blooming-size caliber for double daffodils.

Are daffodils deer and rabbit resistant?

Yes. All parts of daffodils contain compounds that browsing animals avoid, so deer, rabbits, voles, and squirrels typically leave them alone.

Are these bulbs toxic to pets?

Yes, narcissus bulbs and foliage are toxic if eaten by dogs, cats, or livestock. Plant where curious pets dig, or use containers out of reach.

Will they come back every year?

They will. In zones 3-8 Kiwi Sunset returns each spring and forms larger clumps over time, especially if you let the foliage die back naturally before cutting it away.

Can I grow them in a container on the patio?

Yes. Use a pot at least 10 inches deep with good drainage. In zones 3-6, store the pot in an unheated garage or shed over winter so the bulbs chill without freezing solid.
