Planting King's Gold Threadbranch Cypress (Chamaecyparis pisifera ‘King’s Gold’)
- Choose a location in full sun to partial shade. This variety tolerates all-day sun well.
- Select soil that drains well. Avoid areas where water stands after rain.
- Dig a hole 2–3 times wider than the root ball and only as deep as the root ball.
- Remove the plant from its container and gently loosen any circling roots.
- Place the plant so the top of the root ball sits level with or slightly above the surrounding soil.
- Backfill with the native soil. Do not add large amounts of compost or potting soil to the planting hole.
- Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil around the roots.
- Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the plant, keeping mulch a few inches away from the trunk.
Watering New Plants
- Weeks 1–2: Water deeply every day or two, depending on weather and soil drainage.
- Weeks 3–12: Water deeply 1–2 times per week.
- After establishment (about 1 year): Water during extended dry periods.
- Each watering should thoroughly soak the root zone rather than lightly wetting the surface.
Ongoing Care
- Prefers average to rich garden soil with consistent moisture.
- Do not allow the soil to remain constantly wet.
- Apply a balanced slow-release shrub fertilizer in early spring if growth is weak.
- Pruning is usually unnecessary. Remove only dead, damaged, or stray branches.
- This plant is generally resistant to pests, diseases, and deer browsing.
Container Growing
- Use a large container with drainage holes.
- Plant in a quality outdoor potting mix.
- Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil become dry.
- Container plants require more frequent watering than those in the ground.
King's Gold Threadbranch Cypress is a low-maintenance evergreen that develops its best golden color with plenty of sunlight and consistent moisture.
