Janet Craig Dracaena (Dracaena fragrans ‘Janet Craig’)
Planting (Indoor or Outdoor in Warm Climates)
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Tolerates low light but grows slower.
- Soil: Use well-draining potting mix (houseplant mix + a little perlite).
- Pot: Choose a container with drainage holes, 1–2 inches wider than the root ball.
- Planting steps:
- Fill pot 1/3 with soil.
- Place plant so top of root ball is level with soil surface.
- Backfill gently; don’t compact too tightly.
- Water thoroughly until excess drains out.
Watering (Critical)
- Water when top 2–3 inches of soil are dry.
- Water deeply: soak soil evenly until water drains out.
- Empty saucer—do not let roots sit in water.
- Use filtered or distilled water if possible (sensitive to chemicals).
Care & Maintenance
- Humidity: Average indoor is fine; higher is better.
- Temperature: 65–80°F; avoid drafts.
- Fertilizer: Feed monthly in spring/summer with balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength.
- Pruning: Cut canes to control height—new shoots will form.
- Cleaning: Wipe leaves to remove dust.
Container Growing (Patio)
- Keep in shade or filtered light outdoors.
- Bring inside if temps drop below 55°F.
- Check soil more often—containers dry faster.
Common Issues
- Yellow leaves: Overwatering.
- Brown tips: Low humidity or poor water quality.
- Drooping: Usually underwatering or root stress.
Stick to consistent watering and indirect light—this plant is very forgiving once established.
