How to Plant Ivory Halo® Dogwood Shrub
- Choose a location with full sun to partial shade. Best stem color develops with more sun.
- Dig a hole 2–3 times wider than the root ball and only as deep as the root ball.
- Remove the plant from its container and gently loosen circling roots.
- Place the shrub so the top of the root ball is level with or slightly above surrounding soil.
- Backfill with native soil. If soil is very poor, mix in a small amount of compost.
- Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil.
- Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the plant, keeping mulch a few inches away from the stems.
Watering
- Immediately after planting: Water deeply until the root ball and surrounding soil are fully moist.
- First growing season: Water deeply 1–2 times per week, depending on rainfall and temperature.
- Check moisture by inserting your finger 2–3 inches into the soil. Water when the soil begins to dry at that depth.
- Avoid frequent shallow watering, which encourages weak surface roots.
- Once established, the shrub tolerates moist sites and occasional wet conditions.
Fertilizing & Maintenance
- Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring before new growth begins.
- Maintain mulch annually to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
- Each year in late winter or early spring, remove about one-third of the oldest stems at ground level.
- Retain vigorous young stems to promote the brightest red winter color.
Container Growing
Use a large container with drainage holes and quality potting mix. Water more frequently than landscape plantings, especially during hot weather. Containers may require winter protection in very cold climates.
