How to Plant and Care for Ice N' Roses® Red Helleborus
Planting Instructions
- Location: Choose a spot with partial shade. Hellebores tolerate full shade, but partial sun encourages better blooming.
- Soil: Well-drained soil is key. Amend heavy clay soil with compost or organic matter to improve drainage.
- Spacing: Space plants about 18-24 inches apart to allow for mature growth.
- Planting Depth: Dig a hole twice as wide and as deep as the root ball. Place the plant at the same level it was in the pot, then backfill the hole and firm the soil gently.
- Watering: Water thoroughly after planting. Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during the first growing season to establish strong roots.
Care Tips
- Watering: Once established, Hellebores are drought-tolerant. Water during prolonged dry periods, but avoid overwatering.
- Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch (like compost or leaf mold) around the plant in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Fertilization: Feed with a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring.
- Pruning: Remove old, damaged leaves in late winter or early spring before new growth appears to keep the plant looking tidy and reduce disease risk.
- Protection: Deer and rabbit resistant, but watch out for aphids or black spot. Treat with organic sprays if needed.
Ice N' Roses® Red Helleborus also grows well in containers, making it a great option for patios. Ensure the pot has good drainage, and use a high-quality potting mix.
