Thunderbolt® Box Honeysuckle is hardy in USDA zones 5 through 9 and grows best in part sun, which encourages dense growth while keeping its golden color vivid. It is adaptable to most well-drained soils and appreciates consistent moisture while establishing.
Planting
- Choose a site with part sun — a few hours of morning light with afternoon shade brings out the brightest foliage color while protecting leaves from scorch.
- Work the planting area to ensure good drainage; this shrub dislikes soggy, waterlogged soil.
- Dig a hole as deep as the root ball and about twice as wide to loosen the surrounding soil.
- Set the plant so the top of the root ball sits level with the surrounding soil, then backfill, firm gently, and water in thoroughly to settle the roots.
- Apply a 2 to 3 inch layer of mulch over the root zone to conserve moisture and moderate soil temperature, keeping the mulch pulled back a couple of inches from the stems.
Care & maintenance
- Water. Keep the soil evenly moist during the first growing season. Once established, it tolerates average moisture but performs best with regular water during heat and drought.
- Feed. A balanced, slow-release shrub fertilizer applied once in early spring is plenty; avoid heavy feeding, which produces soft, floppy growth.
- Light. Part sun is ideal. Too much deep shade thins the habit and dulls the gold; harsh all-day sun can scorch the foliage in hot climates.
- Prune. This shrub is grown for foliage and responds well to shearing. Trim lightly in late spring or early summer to shape, and again in mid-summer if you want a crisp hedge. Avoid hard pruning late in the season so new growth can harden before winter.
- Mulch & winter care. Maintain a steady mulch layer year-round. In the colder end of its range, an extra layer of mulch in fall helps protect roots; some leaf bronzing in winter cold is normal and recovers in spring.
- Pests & disease. Box honeysuckle is generally trouble-free. Good air circulation and well-drained soil prevent most issues; watch for occasional aphids on tender new growth and rinse them off as needed.
