Planting Holmstrup Arborvitae
Holmstrup Arborvitae is a slow-growing, dense evergreen with a naturally narrow, pyramidal shape. It grows about 10–15 feet tall and 3–5 feet wide, making it an excellent choice for privacy screens, foundation plantings, or accents.
- Light: Plant in full sun (6+ hours daily) for best growth. It tolerates light shade.
- Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained soil. Avoid areas where water stands after rain.
- Planting: Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and no deeper than the root ball. Set the top of the root ball level with or slightly above the surrounding soil. Backfill with native soil and gently firm it.
- Watering: Water thoroughly immediately after planting. For the first 2 weeks, water every 2–3 days if there is no significant rain. For the next 2–3 months, water deeply once or twice per week. After the first growing season, water during extended dry periods. Deep watering is better than frequent light watering.
- Mulch: Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base, keeping it a few inches away from the trunk.
- Fertilizer: If planted in reasonably fertile soil, wait until the following spring to apply a slow-release balanced tree and shrub fertilizer according to the label.
- Pruning: Little pruning is needed. Remove dead or damaged branches in early spring. Avoid cutting back into old wood with no green foliage.
- Container Planting: Use a large container with drainage holes and a quality potting mix. Water more frequently than in-ground plants, as containers dry out faster. In cold climates, protect the container roots from severe winter temperatures.
