Green Velvet Boxwood Planting & Care
Planting
- Choose a location with full sun to partial shade. In hot climates, provide afternoon shade.
- Plant in well-drained soil.
- Dig a hole the same depth as the root ball and twice as wide.
- Place the shrub so the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil.
- Backfill with the native soil, watering every 2–3 inches of soil added to eliminate air pockets.
- Finish by watering thoroughly until the entire root ball and surrounding soil are evenly moist.
- Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the base, keeping mulch a few inches away from the trunk, and extend it about 12 inches beyond the foliage.
Watering
- Keep the soil consistently moist, but never soggy, during the first growing season.
- Water deeply 1–2 times per week, adjusting for rainfall and temperature.
- A slow, deep watering is best so moisture reaches the full root zone.
- Once established, water about once a week during drought or extended hot weather.
Fertilizing
- Feed in early spring before new growth begins with a balanced fertilizer such as 10-10-10.
- Follow the product label for application rates and avoid over-fertilizing.
Pruning
- Prune after the danger of frost has passed in spring.
- Shape into a rounded form or allow the shrub to maintain its naturally compact habit.
- Remove any dead or damaged branches as needed throughout the year.
Container Planting
Grow in a container with drainage holes using a high-quality potting mix. Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry, as containers dry out faster than garden beds. Mulch lightly and protect the pot from extreme winter cold in colder climates.
