Planting Ginger Wine® Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius)
- Light: Plant in full sun (6+ hours) for the best color and flowering. It will tolerate partial shade.
- Soil: Grows in average, well-drained soil. Avoid areas that stay soggy.
- Spacing: Allow 5–6 feet of space for mature growth and good air circulation.
- Planting: Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and the same depth. Place the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil. Backfill with the native soil, gently firming it to remove air pockets.
- Watering: Water deeply immediately after planting until the entire root ball and surrounding soil are soaked. For the first 2 weeks, water every 2–3 days if there is no rain. For the next 2–3 months, water deeply once or twice a week, depending on weather. After establishment (about one growing season), water only during extended dry periods.
- Mulch: Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the plant, keeping it a few inches away from the stems to help conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
- Fertilizer: Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release shrub fertilizer if needed. Avoid excessive fertilization.
- Pruning: Prune immediately after flowering to shape the shrub. Remove dead or damaged branches anytime. Rejuvenate older shrubs by removing up to one-third of the oldest stems at ground level.
- Pollination & Harvest: Pollinators such as bees visit the spring flowers. This ornamental shrub is not grown for edible harvest.
Container planting: Use a large container (at least 20–24 inches wide) with drainage holes and a quality potting mix. Water more frequently than in-ground plants, as containers dry out faster, and protect the roots from extreme winter cold if grown in a pot.
