Fire Chief™ Thuja (Thuja occidentalis 'Congabe')
Fire Chief™ is a compact arborvitae grown for its bright golden foliage that develops orange-red tones in fall and winter. It grows about 3–5 feet tall and wide, making it ideal for foundation plantings, borders, or containers.
Planting
- Choose a location with full sun (best color) to light shade.
- Dig a hole 2–3 times wider than the root ball and only as deep as the root ball.
- Set the top of the root ball level with or slightly above the surrounding soil.
- Backfill with the native soil and gently firm it to remove large air pockets.
- Apply 2–3 inches of mulch, keeping it 2–3 inches away from the trunk.
Watering
- Water thoroughly immediately after planting until the entire root ball is soaked.
- For the first 2 weeks: water daily if the weather is hot or dry; otherwise every 2–3 days.
- Weeks 3–12: water deeply 1–2 times per week, depending on rainfall.
- After establishment (about 1 year): water during extended dry periods.
- Avoid constantly soggy soil.
Care
- Fertilize in early spring with a slow-release balanced shrub fertilizer if needed.
- Pruning is usually unnecessary; remove dead or damaged branches anytime.
- This shrub does not require pollination or produce a harvest.
Container Growing
- Use a pot with drainage holes that is at least 18–24 inches wide.
- Fill with a high-quality potting mix, not garden soil.
- Container plants dry out faster, so check moisture often and water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry.
- In cold climates, protect the pot from repeated freeze-thaw cycles or move it to a sheltered location during winter.
