Fine Line® Buckthorn (Rhamnus frangula 'Ron Williams')
Fine Line® Buckthorn is a narrow, upright shrub that grows about 5–7 feet tall and 2–3 feet wide. It works well as a privacy screen, accent plant, or in tight spaces. Plant in full sun to part shade. It tolerates many soil types but grows best in well-drained soil.
Planting
- Dig a hole 2–3 times wider than the root ball and only as deep as the root ball.
- Place the shrub so the top of the root ball is level with or slightly above the surrounding soil.
- Backfill with the native soil and gently firm it to remove large air pockets.
- Water deeply immediately after planting to thoroughly soak the entire root ball and surrounding soil.
- Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base, keeping it 2–3 inches away from the stems.
Watering
- Weeks 1–2: Water every 2–3 days, soaking the root zone 8–12 inches deep.
- Weeks 3–12: Water once or twice a week, depending on rainfall and temperature.
- After establishment (about 1 year): Water during extended dry periods. This shrub is moderately drought tolerant once established.
Care
- Fertilize in early spring with a balanced slow-release shrub fertilizer if needed.
- Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain its columnar shape and remove dead or damaged branches.
- This cultivar produces very few berries, so pollination is not needed for ornamental use.
- Harvesting is not applicable since it is grown for its attractive foliage and form.
Container Growing
Fine Line® Buckthorn can be grown in a large container at least 20–24 inches wide with drainage holes. Use a quality potting mix, water whenever the top 2 inches of soil are dry, and fertilize lightly each spring. In cold climates, protect the container from repeated freeze-thaw cycles to help prevent root damage.
