Erie Shores™ Yew (Taxus × media 'Erie Shores')
Erie Shores™ Yew is a dense, evergreen shrub that grows best in full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. It is an excellent choice for foundation plantings, hedges, and specimen shrubs.
- Planting: Dig a hole 2–3 times wider than the root ball and no deeper than the root ball's height. Position the top of the root ball level with or slightly above the surrounding soil. Backfill with the native soil and gently firm it to remove air pockets. Apply 2–3 inches of mulch, keeping it a few inches away from the trunk.
- Watering: Water thoroughly immediately after planting. For the first 2 weeks, water every 2–3 days if there is no significant rainfall. For the next 2–3 months, water deeply once or twice a week. After the first growing season, water only during extended dry periods. Deep watering is better than frequent light watering—soak the root zone until the soil is moist 8–12 inches deep.
- Fertilizing: In early spring, apply a slow-release fertilizer formulated for trees and shrubs according to the label. Avoid heavy fertilization during the first season.
- Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins, or lightly shape after the first flush of growth if needed.
- Pollination: Pollination is not needed unless you're interested in berry production. Female plants produce red berries only if a male yew is nearby.
- Container Planting: Use a large pot with drainage holes and a high-quality potting mix. Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry. Containers dry out faster than garden soil, so check moisture frequently. In cold climates, protect the container over winter, as roots are less insulated than those in the ground.
