Degroot's Spire Arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis 'Degroot's Spire')
Planting
- Choose a location with full sun to partial shade (at least 4–6 hours of sunlight daily).
- Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and no deeper than the root ball's height.
- Place the top of the root ball level with or slightly above the surrounding soil.
- Backfill with the native soil and gently firm it to remove large air pockets.
- Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the base, keeping mulch 2–3 inches away from the trunk.
Watering
- Water thoroughly immediately after planting until the entire root ball and surrounding soil are soaked.
- For the first 2 weeks, water every day or two if there is no significant rain.
- For the next 2–3 months, water deeply 2–3 times per week.
- After establishment (about one year), provide about 1 inch of water per week during dry periods.
- Deep watering is better than frequent light watering. Let the hose run slowly at the base so moisture reaches 8–12 inches deep.
Care
- Fertilize in early spring with a slow-release balanced tree and shrub fertilizer if needed.
- Prune only to remove dead or damaged branches or lightly shape. Avoid cutting into old, brown wood.
- No pollination is required since it is grown for its foliage, not fruit.
- Watch for bagworms and spider mites, especially during hot, dry weather.
Container Growing
Suitable only for a few years in a large container with excellent drainage. Water more frequently than in-ground plants, protect the roots from extreme winter cold, and plan to transplant it into the landscape as it matures.
