Planting Dark Green Spreader Yew (Taxus × media 'Dark Green Spreader')
Choose a location with full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. Avoid areas where water stands after rain.
- Dig a hole 2–3 times wider than the root ball but no deeper than the root ball's height.
- Place the shrub so the top of the root ball is level with or slightly above the surrounding soil.
- Backfill with the original soil, gently firming it to remove air pockets. Do not bury the crown.
- Water deeply immediately after planting until the entire root ball is saturated.
- Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the plant, keeping mulch 2–3 inches away from the stems.
Watering
- Weeks 1–2: Water deeply every 2–3 days if there is no significant rainfall.
- Weeks 3–12: Water once or twice a week, soaking the root zone.
- After establishment (about 1 year): Water during extended dry periods.
Deep watering is better than frequent light watering. Water slowly at the base until the soil is moist 8–12 inches deep.
Care & Maintenance
- Fertilize in early spring with a balanced slow-release shrub fertilizer if needed.
- Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain shape.
- Yews are not grown for harvest and do not require pollination to provide landscape value.
- Warning: Most parts of yews (except the fleshy red berry covering) are highly toxic if ingested by people and pets.
Container Planting
Use a large container with drainage holes and a high-quality, well-draining potting mix. Water whenever the top 1–2 inches of soil become dry, as containers dry out faster than garden soil. Protect the container from extreme winter freezing in colder climates.
